As new parents, you need to thoroughly prepare everything that your baby needs. One of the most useful investments that you can make for you and your newborn is a baby stroller. Taking your baby out in a stroller is much more practical and convenient than carrying your baby around. As a matter of fact, you can use it for the first four to five years of your child's life. So you should make sure that you choose the appropriate one. The basic rule of thumb: strollers for newborns should be able to fully recline. There are six types of baby strollers, each with its pros and cons. Not all are appropriate for your newborn. Below is the brief description of each type.
1. Standard or Full-size Strollers
Standard strollers are the most comfortable for babies. They are stable and they have large storage capacity as well as removable pads. They come in various designs, colors, and features. Most standard strollers suit newborns since they are equipped with full recline feature. The more expensive ones provide comfort not only for the baby but also for the carrier. They also come with more comfortable and sturdier handlebar, durable wheels, and advanced metal structure. However, the more features they have, the bulkier they get.
2. Lightweight or Umbrella Strollers
Lightweight strollers are also called umbrella strollers because of their umbrella-like canopies. This is the lightest and also the cheapest type. Unlike the standard type, umbrella strollers have fewer features and are made for convenience. They are best used for short trips. The compact design makes them easier to fold and store. You can put them in the trunk of your car or in the cabin of an airplane without any effort. Despite the convenience, these strollers are not as comfortable as the other types. Most of them are can not be reclined, so they are not suitable for newborns.
3. Jogging or All-Terrain Strollers
Unlike the usual four-wheel strollers, jogging strollers are equipped with three wheels. The front swivel wheel increases maneuverability. As the name suggests, this type of stroller is suitable for all terrain conditions. So it is perfect for outdoor activities such as walking, jogging, running, and hiking. Jogging strollers are durable and lightweight. However, certain models can be a bit too large and cannot be easily folded. Although some models have fully reclined seats, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you should not use jogging strollers until your children are at least 6 months old.
4. Multiple Strollers
This type is the modified version of the standard stroller. Choose one with fully reclined seats if you want to use it for your newborns. The double strollers are ideal for parents with twin children or those with more than one infant or toddler. There are two types of multiple strollers - tandem strollers or side by side strollers. Tandem strollers are more convenient for narrow paths. However, your baby at the back seat will have very limited view. Side by side strollers provide equal view for your babies, but can be difficult to navigate through tight spaces.
5. Travel System Strollers
The travel system is the combination of a stroller and a car seat, therefore it is convenient for families on the go. Some models have the car seat permanently attached to the stroller, while others feature removable car seat. Because of its versatility, the travel system is actually less expensive than buying the components separately.
6. Backpack Strollers
These strollers can be easily folded into a backpack. They are convenient for outdoor activities such as hiking and sightseeing. They provide a better view for your baby and allow the freedom of using your hands since they do not require pushing.
