Jogging is an outstanding exercise. It offers so many benefits, from an excellent way to get into shape, to losing weight, to having some alone time for reflection and introspection. Let's not forget it can be a way of meeting some very interesting people. It is also a very inexpensive way to do all of the above.
You can get started for the cost of a good pair of running shoes. It takes about 30 minutes to get an excellent workout. With all those benefits you might just want to go out and run 10 miles before you finish reading this article. I would suggest you finish reading these tips first:
1. Before you even begin your running regime it is critically important that you have the right shoes for your feet. There are hundreds of different designs, types and styles for you to choose from. It is important that you choose functionality over appearance. After all, just because the shoe looks good doesn't mean it will feel good, or support your feet as needed. Go shopping and check out what is available and pick a good running shoe that is comfortable and fits your feet comfortably.
2. Start out with baby steps. If you jump right in without knowing what you are really getting into you may hurt yourself. If you are injured that will delay the benefits you were looking for, as well as the possibility of becoming disillusioned and stopping before you have even begun. Set some small goals initially and work your way up from there.
3. It is also important that you consider safety while you are running. I do not want to imply any will happen to you, but as you know an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Consider letting someone know which route you will be running and an estimate of when you will return. Carry your cell phone and some id with you. Run where there are other people around if at all possible. Depending on where you are running, get to know the rules for pedestrians. I live in the country and running on a gravel road in the opposite direction of traffic is safer, so consider your situation and adjust accordingly.
4. It is also important to listen to your body. Things do happen, like blisters, sores, and other type of injuries. Take care of yourself and don't push through the pain. No need to be macho. If your body sends you a signal listen to it and react accordingly. It might also be good to carry a water bottle with you since dehydration is no fun.
5. Get motivated! Perhaps you can bring along an iPod or walkman and load in some inspiring music or a motivational talk. It is important to keep encouraging yourself since after a few weeks or months you may be wondering why you are doing this anyway. There was an initial goal: perhaps it was a New Year's Resolution, some advice you got from your doctor or that wedding dress you want to fit into. Whatever the reason is it is important to keep it in your mind. It would also be great if you could make it fun. If you have a goal and it is fun then you will be motivated to keep doing what you are doing.
There are so many benefits to running that they could fill up dozens more articles - and it will. Remember every journey starts with the first step. In this case it will be that first jog down your driveway. Here's to your happy jogging experience - may you run for your health and have fun doing it.
